What is Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)?

The term “narcissist” is used often these days, unfortunately it is not always used correctly. This label is often attached to individuals who are seen as being “full of themselves”. While this can be a piece of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), it certainly is not all of it. The more you know about NPD the sooner you can seek intervention to minimize the impact it has on you whether you are the one with NPD or someone close to you is experiencing symptoms and behaviors consistent with it.

Symptoms of NPD

Narcissism can be a personality trait that is not necessarily a disorder, but when these traits become pervasive and interfere with a person’s ability to maintain healthy relationships or function effectively in daily life, they may have Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), NPD is characterized by:

  • An exaggerated sense of self-importance
  • A preoccupation with fantasies of success, power, and beauty
  • A belief that they are unique and can only be understood by other special people
  • A need for excessive admiration
  • A lack of empathy
  • A tendency to exploit others for personal gain
  • Envy of others or a belief that others are envious of them
  • Arrogant or self-righteous behaviors

Due to a lack of compassion or empathy, people with NPD often have difficulty forming and maintaining genuine, meaningful relationships. Many feel exploited and as if their relationship is one sided when coupled with someone with NPD.

Treatment for NPD

NPD can impact the way you live your life and interact with others. Recovery is possible when you are motivated to make change. Evidence based therapy approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) can be effective interventions.
