Making the Connection: Start by Talking To Your Therapist
Nothing beats the pleasure of doing all the things you’re passionate about. Whether you enjoy doing things with someone or by yourself, there is a sense of comfort and ease as you savor the undeniable signs of pleasure. You may smile or laugh, dance to a lilting tune, or lick your lips at the taste of a favorite dish. Even if the activity you love to do is scary or tough, enjoyment is possibly being deeply entrenched in your brain.
Now, if you can’t feel joy for your successful endeavor, much less for what others have accomplished, you’re suffering from loss of interest or pleasure in activities. This condition is otherwise known as anhedonia; a condition in which you feel little or nothing for things you find rewarding or enjoyable before. Everything falls flat and bleak – family, friends, work, hobbies, nature, sex, food, and so on.
No Need to Be Alone
In the world of anhedonia, the thrill is gone because the major depressive episode causing it affects the pleasure circuits of the brain too. As you suffer, your moods can worsen your emotional emptiness. Your relationships start to falter because not all people can understand you - all that’s left is resentment and alienation.
While there is homeopathy and self-help remedies that may help restore your loss of interest or pleasure in activities, there’s no guarantee you’ll get out of the condition within reasonable time. You’re still left on your own to wait around for your old self to resurrect. You may believe that you must you do it alone even when you are aware there are people who are willing to listen. If you firmly decide to re-immerse yourself in things you were once passionate about, reach out for support. Remember making the connection is important and help is available to end the dullness of anhedonia (one of the most frustrating symptoms of depression).
The First Step to Reconnect
There are a number of resources available to provide support and help to enable you to overcome this depressive condition. Family and friends can initially be your source of strength, comfort and motivation, but getting treatment is nearly impossible this way. The family doctor or a spiritual adviser can be your other options to consider, but, if you want that first step to count, the best choice is consulting a licensed therapist.
Carolina Counseling Services has many qualified and experienced therapists who are ready to help pull you out from the current condition that spoils your fun. Whether you call by phone or stride into the Fayetteville Office, your Carolina Counseling Services therapist will be with you every step of the way to help you reconnect with your old passions and start enjoying life once more. Make an appointment now before anhedonia cripples you for life.
