Psychological health care is viewed as an additional expense. Many people struggling with psychological or substance abuse problems often find themselves choosing between seeking therapy and buying basic necessities. If job is paid on hourly basis, for some, the perspective is that getting treatment means not going to work and not making money.
The Affordable Care Act mandates that psychological health care should be covered by insurance providers. However, the law is not comprehensive enough to allay people’s apprehensions about the challenges in accessing care. Many are still hesitant to get help because some insurance plans only pay limited treatment options while the rest comes from out of pocket expenses of patients. The type of insurance drives people to seek the treatment they need.
Apart from the limitations of insurance policies, some people are worried about the stigma of psychological health problems. Asking help could mean admission that all is not well and others might judge you unfairly or be critical of the treatment you choose. It takes courage to ask for help for it means you’re willing to embrace changes and liberate yourself from the claws of issues keeping you from being your best self.
The path to improved psychological health is to seek help from licensed, caring counselors with adequate training and experience on diagnosing and treating behavioral health problems. A professional therapist with an extensive experience may use a combination of treatment approaches to find something that works more effectively. Psychological blocks/issues can impact a person’s life as well as the people around them. It’s already overwhelming and it seems even more so to be aggravated by burdensome requirements such as a doctor’s referral.
